Manley William Owen, son of James J Owen who with James' brother Joseph Owen began making pottery in the mid 19th century. Owen(s) family potters spans 6 generations in North Carolina. Manely worked for E..A. Poe Pottery in Fayetteville NC in the 1880s. This is a milk crock, used store and keep milk cool in the spring house. The crock would be inserted in a round hole in a board across a cool spring. The bottom of the crock would be immersed in the cool running water. 7 3/4 inches tall. It is signed MW Owen. It has one significant rim chip and tow minor flakes.
